Paint Like an Artist (any medium)

with Nancy Angelini

Learn to compose a beautiful painting from any photo.  

In this class we'll look closely at building a good foundation for a painting through composition and value choices and then on to color!.  I call this class "Paint Like an Artist" to expand our thinking beyond copying to creating.  If you've ever taken photos that captured a special moment or a great memory but not a perfect photo, then that's a great choice. 

In order to get closer to a completed painting in a short amount of time I'd suggest focusing primarily on landscapes, however the information you'll learn will be applicable to any further paintings!  

This class is beneficial for any medium but our focus will be in soft pastels. 

Set aside a day for you and your art.

Supply Lists

Supplies for all mediums

•    Sketchbook

•    Grayscale value markers OR a pencil (mechanical or bring a sharpener)

•    Photo. Printed is best.  Or use one of mine.  Electronics not recommended. 

Supplies for pastels

•    Pastel paper, two pieces of similar value (one piece for small studies and one 9x12 up to 12x16)  I’ll use Canson for studies and UArt for larger pieces. Bring what you have.

•    Pastels of your choice. A limited palette is fine so long as there's a good value range (light to dark variety) I use less expensive ones for studies.

•    Easel unless you work flat.  I have a few extra small table top easels. Let me know if you need one

•    Aluminum foil

•    Wet wipes

•    Glassine paper, tracing paper, wax paper or tissue paper to protect your work when you’re done.

•    Foam core or gatorboard larger than your paper to tape your work to

•    Artists Tape  (I don’t recommend blue or colored tape, black or white is best)

Optional

•    mask, gloves, apron, hat with a brim in case of lighting glare

Supplies for other mediums

•        bring your usual set up

•        substrate of your choice, one for small studies and one 9x12 to 12x16
